Uni Pressures, Anxiety and Living the Dream

living the dream

In my last post I announced some big news about the future of my blog, which marks a new chapter for my writing and also some other changes in my life. Before that, it had been close to six months since my last post so it appears we have some catching up to do!

So where HAVE you been? I hear you all cry.

Writing your first novel? Single-handedly fighting for world peace?

For the Last Time

Since graduating I've been pretty elusive about my life plans. Partly because I wasn't entirely sure what the hell I was doing myself, but also because I'm somewhat paranoid and didn't want to jinx my plans by sharing them with the world.

August Goals

It's been a while since I last shared a goal post, but it's something I'm determined to get back in the habit of.

Graduation Photo Diary

On Wednesday the 15th of July I graduated with a First Class Honours in Media from Robert Gordon University. I spent the day giggling between (and during) glasses of wine, celebrating the past four years of my life with some of the people who contributed to making it so memorable.

After two days of much needed recovery I gathered with some of my classmates to celebrate once more at our graduation ball. Captured below are some of my favourite moments from both events:

When Quitting Isn't Quitting

In my last post I mentioned that I had taken some time out of blogging for a few reasons. Namely, university and actually wanting to leave with a degree.

The Blogging Lie

Regular readers of this blog may have noticed a serious lack of posts as of recent. In fact, I think this is the longest I've gone without blogging since I started two and a half years ago! There are two reasons for this.

Quote of the Week #8: Confidence is key

make yourself proud quote
We come into this world with an inbuilt desire to impress and please other people. From that boy in the sandpit at nursery right up until your boss in your first big girl job. There is always somebody you want to acknowledge your greatness because otherwise what's the point right? Wrong.

Wanderlust

Ever since I came back from Amsterdam earlier this year, I have had an overwhelming urge to travel. So many people I met on the trip had been travelling all over Europe and hearing about their experiences got me thinking about going on my own.

So sorry that I haven't done an update for a while - I haven't forgotten about my blog don't worry! At the minute I have so many deadlines for uni and as much as I love my blog uni will always be priority number one. Should have a couple of New Years Eve posts up next week so don't lose hope in me yet!

Stress Be Gone!

So today we're going to talk about stress. I've seen a few posts lately, including my own a month or so ago, saying how stressed everyone is and I can completely understand. Up until recently I was incredibly stressed about uni and deadlines and quite frankly just everything was getting to be too much. It truly happens to the best of us, the main thing though, is to make sure stress doesn't get the best of you!

How to Combat Flat Tension

the girls

Hey guys! I’m Kerys from Little Bo Blab, Efia has not only chosen me as her blog of the month but also asked me to do a little guest post too. I feel like such a special sausage!

So I was having a little think about what kind of post I wanted to share with you guys, & I think considering Efia’s blog is mainly lifestyle themed, I’d tell you guys a little story.

Semester to Semester Raving with the Freshers

So if by the odd (and also very unlikely!) chance you don't know what Fresher's Week is check this out.

Last year unfortunately I was seventeen during Fresher's Week so basically couldn't attend any of the club events. Which really really sucked because it is a brilliant opportunity to make new friends and just really good fun. This year I was determined not to miss out on the fun so signed up to be on the university's 'Fresher's Team'.

The Freshers Team is built up of past students who volunteer to wear hideous brightly coloured irange t-shirts and dedicate a week of their time to help new students settle into university life in every sense of the term. So yes in some, even most, cases that involves excessive drinking! But the main aim is to be a friendly face in unfamiliar territory and to make sure everyone has a good time and gets the most out of their week.

So when on the Freshers Team I STILL hadn't recovered from my Bestival illness and was feeling really stressed and under the weather, so ended up bailing after one weekend. However the time that I did spend on the team was really fun. I met some great people and wish that when I moved in I'd had a Freshers Team because as you may know my first week at uni wasn't a pleasant experience! Read more about that here.

My first day on the team was spent helping new students move into their halls which turned out to be a bit of a mission.  I automatically turned on anyone who lived on the top floor - I'm unfit as it is climbing several flights of stairs with very heavy *ahem* ... pillows is treacherous work I tell you! No but seriously, it was tiring!

That took up the whole day and then we had a few hours to go home for dinner before meeting up at the halls again for the evening session where we would socialise with the new students in their flats before taking them on to the union to partaaaay!

Unfortunately, yet again I had to drop out of something because I wasn't feeling up to it (and I'd just started my new job, but more about that later!). The days I spent on the Fresher's Team were fun but but they were also tiring and I'm not sure I would have managed to go out ten days in a row! Despite this I did manage to go out a couple of nights with my flatmates, and these nights were also mixed experiences.

In first year I really enjoyed going out to clubs etc, but I think now the novelty has worn off a bit and with old age (one year older) comes a tired Efia who can't keep it going til three in the morning unless the night really is something amazing - and so far they haven't really been up to par.

What about you guys? How was your Fresher's Week? And if this isn't your first year how do you find going out - are you still as interested in it? Let me know!

Ps - I'm sorry for the lack of posts recently but the firsts couple of weeks back have been SO hectic. I have some good posts coming up for you though and will let you know what I've been up to as soon as I get a minute to catch my breath! Thanks for your patience and I really do appreciate every follower, every comment and every post read!

Steal My Student Style With These 5 Killer Items You Need To Buy

1. Miss Selfridge, cable knit jumper (£37) // 2. Topshop, petite cross leggings (£20) // 3. Gucci, Guilty Eau de Toilette (£47) // 4. Monsoon, Louise boot (£60) // 5. H&M, Coloured blazer (£30)

In a couple of weeks I'll be back at uni so I thought I'd share with you 5 killer items from my autumn wishlist.

When I've got an early morning lecture all I want to do is skulk off back to bed and spend as little time getting ready as possible. These Topshop leggings are the perfect comfort wear and teamed with the cable knit jumper make for a super quick outfit that is perfect for Autumn and can be pulled together in a matter of minutes. While I love the Topshop leggings, my sister bought some dupes off eBay for half the price so I am probably more likely to get those.

The blazer is probably one of the things I'm most likely to buy as it will go with so many things I already own! As for the boots, if I ever come into possession of these babies I just know I'll wear them all the time and if they have grippy soles then maybe I can justify buying them as I can make good use of them in the Winter time too.

Finally, with my birthday coming up I'm really hoping someone will be kind enough to buy me the Gucci Guilty perfume. It smells absolutely divine and if I had the money spare I'd have bought it already. In the meantime my sister has a bottle so I'll just keep stealing hers - we all know that's what sisters are for.

What is on your wish list for going back to college/uni/school? Do we have any of the same things on our lists?

Four Important Lessons I Learned In My First Year at University

The first year at university for many is the next and also, most important, chapter of their pre-adult life.

It's a time when you are no longer a teenager, but not quite yet an adult. Although you're released into the big bad world it's just getting your toes wet in the grand scheme of things.

This is my advice and reflection on my time at university so far:

Welcome to Effy Talks Life

Hello, and welcome to Effy Talks Life!

I'm so excited to finally get started so I thought to get things going I'd give you a quick recap of my summer so far:

Uni

I finished (and passed!) my first year at uni - woohoo! I made some great new friends, did some partying and of course a bit of studying too.

Visiting home

It was really nice to see everyone again, especially as I hadn't seen some friends from home in over six months. We drank a lot (probably too much) and reminisced about the good old days.

I went to Beach Break Live

Beach Break Live is an amazing student music festival set in Wales set on across the beautiful setting of a beach and a forest. It rained practically the entire time apart from our last day.  My friend Becky and I shared a four man tent between us and my sister and her friend Lilly had a three man tent each. Unfortunately, by the second day, their cheap little tents had given up so we all ended up sharing together. It was tight squeeze but hey, that's what friends are for - right?

The train journey back was a nightmare and nobody had any money left on the last day, but all-in-all it was a great time and I can't wait to go back next year.

I've had a great summer so far and I'm heading off to Bestival next week so even more to look forward to. I can't wait to go back to Aberdeen and move into my new flat and see everyone again. As weird as it sounds I miss uni too.

I've had a five month break and can't wait to get my head back in the game. I'm studying some really interesting sounding modules this year (Documentary Discourse and Practice I am talking about you!) so hopefully it will be a good semester.

What about you guys? What have been the highlights of your summer and when do your holidays end?
