Dans le Noir? – An Adventure in Blind Eating

dans le noir melbourne
Can you imagine eating a five course meal in total darkness?

When it comes to food I’m obsessed. I love getting out there and enjoying food in new ways. Whether it’s learning to cook in Bali, devouring a thirty course tasting menu in Barcelona or the eating a 50p bowl of Pho on the side of a road in Vietnam clinging on to a child sized plastic stool for dear life.

You get the picture.

Anything that involves eating and most importantly experiencing food - I’m in.

So from the moment that I heard Dans le Noir was opening it’s first dining in the dark experience in Melbourne in my mind I’d already clocked out of whatever it was I was doing and started masterminding my trip.

Adelphi Kitchen Review

Adelphi Kitchen restaurant
Recently the Aberdeen bloggers and I were invited along to try the new Spring/Summer menu at Adelphi Kitchen. If you're a regular reader of my blog you know how I feel about food, so to say I was excited would be a vast understatement.

I really hate wasting food and this month, especially in the lead up to pay day, I've been making a conscious effort to be more resourceful.

Herb Crusted Roast Rack of Lamb

I absolutely love cooking and have done since I was a little girl. I vividly remember being seven years old and delighted to finally posses my own Winnie the Pooh cook book. Now at the ripe old age of 21 I find it just as exciting, if not more so as I can lick the spoon without fear of being shouted at.

Travel Diaries #4: Sun, Sushi and Santa Barbara

group sushi
This weekend the other interns and I decided to hit the road and go on our first all-American road trip, leaving behind our cushy apartment in San Diego (more on that later) to make our way up the Californian coast to San Carlos for a barbecue with a few stops, and a motel stay, along the way. Despite our excellent combined planning skills we somehow failed to anticipate the ridiculous traffic heading into LA, even at our bright and early time of twelve in the afternoon. Another thing we failed to anticipate was the dramatic increase in temperature between San Diego and LA and as a result of our poor judgement Jose and I divided the majority of the ride between melting into our seats and trying to nap away the pain.  A few hours into the journey we decided to get some relief and headed to a sushi place just off the freeway for lunch.

Aunty Betty's Ice Cream Parlour

Aunty Betty's ice cream
I am a recovering sugar fiend and a self confessed health freak. So much so that anybody who has spent a great deal of time with me will probably tell you that my eating habits just plain piss them off. However on this particular occasion I let myself slip and tiptoed over to the dark side, just for one afternoon...

Stateside Bucket List

stateside bucket list vw

So as you might of heard from my 'Life's a Beach' blog post I'm off to America for ten and half weeks this summer and to get the most of my visit I've come up with a stateside bucket list of some of the top things I'd like to do while I'm there. For the first eight weeks I'm going to be carrying out an internship programme through The Saltire Foundation with three other Scottish interns (who I've yet to meet but have been in very excited Facebook talks with!) Our internship itself is in San Diego then after the eight weeks we're going on to do a bit of our own travelling including San Francisco, LA and finishing in New York for our last few days. It's been a life long ambition of mine to go to America (who wouldn't want to go?!), but you know being a student and all money is kinda an issue. The great thing about the internship programme through The Saltire Foundation is they cover all the costs of the flights, accommodation and living for the duration of your internship so it's just the extra two and a half weeks travelling and the costs associated with that that I have to worry about and i's an opportunity I just could not let pass me by, no matter how broke I'm gonna be.

It's pretty unlikely I'll manage to do everything on my stateside bucket list, especially as plans always tend to change, but I thought it would be fun to share it with you guys anyway and I'd love to hear your suggestions too!

Cooking for Dummies #4: One Dish Dinner

I recently had some time off work and decided to make myself something proper to eat. I'm ashamed to admit that recently more often than not I catch myself eating out, especially as I get a huge discount on food at work. Despite this, I really enjoy cooking when I have the time. I find it relaxing and fun (if you disinclude washing the dishes afterwards).

This dish literally came together as I was going along, but it worked surprisingly well which is why I've chosen to share it. It's ridiculously easy and tastes amazing!

Union Square Autumn Fashion Fix

Last weekend myself and some of the NEBE girlies were invited for a day of fun and pampering at Union Square's (one of my local shopping centres) 'Autumn Fashion Fix'. Those who know me well will know morning is not in my vocabulary, however I rocked up at 10:30am precisely (I'm really beginning to get this time thing down y'know) ready for the day ahead!

Bistro Verde

Bistro Verde is one of my favourite 'treat yourself' places to go of an evening. One - because the Sticky Toffee Pudding is to die for and two - I have a friend who works there so I get the added joy of terrorizing her while she rushes about trying to do her job.

Christos Greek Taverna

So last week I went out for a meal with my sister and our good friend Maya to celebrate me getting a job for summer. My sister insisted we go somewhere out of the norm so after not being able to get a suitable reservation at Yatai (which I am still determined to go to!) we decided to go to Christos Greek Taverna which came highly recommended and also ranked #14 on Trip Advisor for Aberdeen restaurants.

Winter Warmers: Lentil Soup Recipe

I made this soup once before during summer and decided it was time to start making it again now that it's getting colder outside! This is literally one of the easiest recipes you will EVER, yes, EVER come across. Even my flatmate who never ever cooks found this recipe easy to follow and it is almost impossible to screw up. So for all you beginner cooks and students who have decided you need some real food - this babys for you!

Review: The Living Room Restaurant and Bar

For the past week I've been down in Manchester visiting my boyfriend. I had some time off uni for consolidation week so it seemed like the perfect opportunity to go down! On my last night in Manchester we decided to eat out (a regular occurrence) and since we always eat Asian food I wanted to try something different. We'd been shopping all afternoon and when we finally got outside it was raining quite a bit so we speed walked over to Deansgate (which if you don't know Manchester is a busy road which bounds the west side of the city centre) in the hopes of finding that something different.

I think initially we were thinking La Tasca, but I thought if I'm going to be spending a fair amount of money on food I want it to be a full meal not loads of mini ones! A couple of restaurants down from La Tasca sat The Living Room and after a peek at the outdoor menu we decided to take the plunge and go inside.

So as you can see when you walk in there is a bar and then towards the back of the room is the restaurant part, both of which were beautifully decorated although had no resemblance to the living rooms of anyone I know! When faced with the task of choosing our meals I have to say both of us took our time - there was just so much to choose from!

In the end we both settled for their soup of the day, which was a smoked haddock chowder, for our starter and Taba chose the Pappardelle pasta with a slow cooked shin of beef and pancetta ragu for his main whilst I went for a total wildcard (and I say wild card because I'm going through a chicken hating stage!) of Rosemary and lemon baked chicken with roasted garlic and mash.

The starters took about ten minutes to arrive, which is pretty reasonable in my opinion, and they certainly did not disappoint. The chowder was a nice creamy consistency with small flakes of haddock, peas, cubed potatoes and a strange white lump in the middle which took about a minute identify which in the end turned out to be a poached egg!

The soup itself was SO tasty, and incredibly moreish although I did end up giving Taba half my poached egg as I didn't want to get too full before the main event. If I had one criticism it would probably be that I was expecting larger haddock flakes but that's about all I could fault!

When we first ordered we worried there wouldn't be enough food as we're both quite big eaters, but by the time we'd finished our soup those worries were long gone. Shortly after we finished our starters and I'd had enough time to worry about whether I'd made the right choice by picking a chicken dish - The main courses arrived.

Taba's looked a little like a posh spaghetti Bolognese, but he claims it tasted completely different. The sauce was rich and had almost shredded pieces of tender slow cooked beef and was served on what looked like a wider version of tagliatelle. While mine was a chicken breast (curiously on the bone) served on a bed of mash and savoy cabbage which was accompanied by a dash of red wine jus.

I was SO glad I ordered the chicken it was moist, the flavour was just incredible and what they had done with lemon flavouring was something I had never experience before. Interestingly there were pieces of rosemary actually IN the chicken and I spent quite some time trying to figure out how they got it in there to no avail.

Although arguably one of the best meals I've had recently I would have liked a bit more of the red wine jus. I know the small serving is supposed to look visually appealing but a jus moat would have done me just fine.

For dessert we were both quite full so just ordered some hot drinks, a latte with a shot of maple spice syrup for me and an Earl Grey tea for Taba. I have to admit I completely ruined my coffee by adding sugar to it before I tasted it. The maple syrup was a lot sweeter than I anticipated and it was just so sweet to the point of undrinkable, but kindly Taba offered to swap drinks with me and I leapt at the opportunity!

Overall I'd rate my experience 4.5 out of 5 only losing half a point due to the atmosphere being slightly disturbed by the bar, which wasn't too big a deal but it did slightly effect the intimacy of the meal. Nonetheless our waitress was lovely and the food exceeded both our expectations. As we were leaving I noticed someone playing a piano in the middle of the room so maybe next time we will time our visit so we get to hear the music.

I apologise for the lack of my own photos but it was such an impromptu trip that I didn't have my camera on me, sorry - next time!

What about you guys? What's the best place you've eaten recently and what did you have? Let me know!

Recipe: Oven Roasted Pumpkin Seeds

Around this time of year there is always, without doubt, an influx of pumpkins - fairy godmothers eat your hearts out. Since the age we were old enough to effectively go begging for sweets with our friends and families, we have been programmed to believe their sole purpose is to brighten our door steps and scare our loving neighbours. I am here to tell you just like Santa and just like the tooth fairy, this is not the case - you have been lied to.

Why you ask have you been lied to? So your parents could keep this delicious secret all to themselves! Now, I must admit when my flatmate (Becca) bounced into the kitchen telling me tales of roasted pumpkin seeds I was a bit unsure. I'd never heard of such a thing before, and the seeds I'd eaten previously in my Graze boxes were just awful. Despite this, she was my flatmate and if I didn't go along with her crazy ideas who knows it might have been me she roasted next!

Before committing to making my own I tasted some seeds that Becca, who does not cook unless absolutely necessary, had made and well I was very surprised  They were crunchy and salty and SO DAMN GOOD. How could it be I'd never heard of them before?

If you like myself never had the luxury of making these when you were younger or have heard about their wondrous properties (they're loaded with vitamins and protein), let me educate you on this well kept secret.

I'm sure there are numerous ways and I'm also sure those ways are all very tasty but I'm going to tell you how to roast your seeds Efia style. Okay so first, you need a pumpkin! Once you have captured said pumpkin cut it's top off to reveal the goods and either scoop the seeds out with a spoon or just grab them out with your (clean!) hands.

Once you've retrieved as many seeds as you can rid them of the fleshy pumpkin bits and spread them out on a baking tray - I should mention while you're doing this whack the oven on to 180 degrees or the fan equivalent (160). Now that they're on a baking tray you can prep your master piece! For mine I drizzled them with olive oil, sprinkled with rosemary and also seasoned with a splash of soy sauce and some salt. Becca being the devil in disguise doesn't like chillies or I would have probably added them too.

Once your prep is done put them in the oven and wait for the magic to happen, which is approximately 10mins or when the seeds are no longer chewy/ a light golden brown colour, and enjoy!

These make a great healthy snack or a lovely addition to soups and salads, hope you enjoy them as much as I did!

What about you guys how have you used your pumpkins this year? In the traditional way or have you done something out of the norm? Let me know!

(Please note: Becca is a lovely girl and this story has been dramatised for humorous purposes!)

Thrifty Thursday #1: How to Save Money When Eating Out

What's not to love about eating out? No washing up, the chance to try new food, great for social gatherings - It has many perks. However, on a student budget one thing that I don't love is the price. I simply can't justify spending £15 quid on a meal when it's half the price of my WEEKLY food shop.

Not to worry though there are some great ways to save money when eating out and you lovely readers, are about to get a slice of that money saving action!

One - DONT pay for a drink. Ask for a glass of water which is free and miles better for you than juice or alcohol anyway. Make sure you ask for tap water though as you will still be charged for anything that comes in a bottle!

Two - DO carry out your research. The amount of times I've eaten at Pizza Express because they e-mail me discounts is crazy, maybe disgusting even. Sign up to the mailing lists of your favourite restaurants, check out their websites for any exclusive deals they might have, 'Like' their Facebook, 'Follow' their Twitter - become their number one fan.

Three - DONT forget to leave feedback. I once had a bad experience at Nando's with cold, burnt food and wrote to them about it. A week or so later I received an apologetic letter and a voucher for a full platter for two. When we got to the restaurant they proceeded to give us two free desserts which weren't even included in the voucher! This isn't to say pick on every little detail in order to get freebies but let them know about your experience you never know what you might get out of it, this goes for positive feedback too!

Four - DO take advantage of your group size. Several Asian restaurants (and also a few others) offer set menus for different group sizes. I'm not sure of the exact reasoning behind it, but often buying a set menu deal is significantly cheaper than ordering your own individual portions

Five - DONT order a three course meal the likelihood that you'd eat it all is very slim and there is nothing worse than wasted food, especially when you're eating on a budget.

Six - DO Bring your own booze. If you do enjoy the odd glass of wine with your meals why not go to an unlicensed restaurant where you can take your own? Most restaurants charge a ludicrous amount for a bottle of house wine so it makes sense really to go to somewhere you can take your own. Check out this link for a directory of these restaurants.

So there you have it, those are some of my top tips on how to save money whilst eating out! What are your tips and do you do any of these? Let me know!
